A popular style that the 'Roaring Twenties' were most known for. The arms are bare and corsets were no long of much liking to a flapper because the flapper would be unable to dance freely. The short hair was a trend that the flapper style supported. Nude stockings were wore in order to make the leg appear more nude. As well as patterns that were either made out of silk or artificial silk. The typical flapper dress is loose fitting giving the flappers the freedom to dance with much comfort. The short hair style for a flapper displayed their daring nature since a women's hair was previously was a display of their 'crowned glory'. The pearl necklaces and jewelry compliments the beauty of the flapper and was often seen on many flappers. The cloche hat was a display to show that a woman's hair was short. The showing of a bare forehead was considered unfashionable. The cloche hat covered it and caused many women to change their body postures. Since the cloche hat covers the forehead, it became a common issue seeing pass the hat since it would also cover the eyes at an angle. Women would position themselves in order to be able to see what was ahead of them and where they were going. The cloche hat was tight, it had in deed gave women's' hair a flat appearance which was also conveniently in fashion as well.
The coats and outerwear gave the women of the 1920 a very 'mannish' figure. This was very convenient considering that the fashionable trend for the women in the 1920s was to have a manly figure. The coats were mostly were vintage and had a soft, rich wool material. There was a high price range for coats which would range from $49.50-$79.50 depending on the material and designs. There were colors that were called bittersweet red, cloud gray, gypsy red, copper brown and fluffy beige.
Short hair was a symbol of defiance and adventure. The 1920s was an era where many wanted to be daring, a woman would show there daring spirit by cutting their long hair. Coco Chanel, a famous fashion designer, had a beautiful short hairstyle, as well as celebrity Clara Bow did. Women want to be just like these celebrities and join the movement of women having a masculine look. It was also easier to style and put into a cloche hat. The cloche was a fashionable hat which would usually be add with the short bob. In the 1900s in general, flaunting the in differences of the man and woman was usually frowned upon. Anything that would appear 'sexy' or appealing would be considered a sin. The flat chest was a fashion trend that showed that the women are no different from the men. Women in the 1920s were now able to vote and they were wanting to have more equality. The flat chest was a step closer to equality, as it was viewed back then. Women that were naturally flat chested were lucky, for women who had big breasts needed to try different methods. There would be wraps and corsets to prevent the display of the chest. The masculine silhouettes has the same purpose as the flat chested expectation did. The masculine silhouettes were to make the women have a more masculine appearance which was the trend back then. The clothes in the 1920s was very loose for the same principle. Overall, the masculine silhouette's purpose was to give the women's the equality between men by looking more like them. |
